SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS

Author's Note: " Why teach spiritual warfare? Today, it seems that an imbalanced gospel is being proclaimed today. People are being fed the lie today...come to Jesus and he will bless your business, and everything will be rosy, and birds are singing in green meadows, and now we will have no more problems as we cruise into heaven. This is an unfair message...Why? BECAUSE IT IS A LIE FROM OUR SELFISH, HUMANISTIC POINT OF VIEW BORN FROM THE DEVIL.

TRUTH #1: If we come to an altar with a carnal intention...it is unlikely that we will ever die to the old man...and you can't be born again if you don't die first. BECAUSE OF THIS, MANY THAT WE GET IN...NEVER GET RIGHT.

TRUTH #2: Also it is unfair to new converts to make them believe that there is no troubles when the bible promises us that we will...but we will conquer and not be overcome when we are in Christ, and under his lordship.

We preach a risen Christ...a positive, powerful gospel...but for it to be really powerful and effective, it must be balanced. To get real people through real problems it must be balanced. We live in wicked world with wicked forces set against us...the darkness does not peacefully co-exist with the light. And the Word of God shows this conflict from the garden to Armageddon. There is a real Satan = Greek satanas from the Hebrew Satan meaning adversary, or enemy...HIS VERY NAME SHOWS HIS VIOLENT NATURE TOWARD US. We basically find a conflict between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness...What side are we on? And how effective are we? "

SECTION ONE
THE NATURE OF OUR WARFARE AND IT'S REALITY

THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE

STUDY TEXT:   Ephesians 6:10-18 " 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. {flesh...: Gr. blood and flesh} {spiritual...: or, wicked spirits} {high: or, heavenly} 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {having...: or, having overcome all} 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; "

The Bible says to be strong how?
IN THE LORD and
IN THE POWER OF HIS MIGHT

This is the key to winning any spiritual struggle. You might as well mark it down in your bibles... this is a power key to winning. Its not our intelligence or wisdom or position in church or how long that we have been a Christian or who our family is or how big and bad we feel we are ourselves. We ourselves cannot fight this struggle and win... we can't win it through the flesh at all.

But victory comes from being strong in the Lord and being strong in the power of His might.

Ephesians 2:1-3 " 1 And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. "

It is a spiritual war against demonic forces, not humanity. So, the weapons must also be spiritual for them to be effective against spirit beings.   2 Corinthians 10:3-4 " 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) "

Most people seem to miss the 7th part of the armour, praying always... when? Always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Spiritual prayer takes the whole armour of God, and puts it into operation and holds it together through our battles.

THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NAS) " 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.
11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,"

Ephesians 6:14 " Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; "

[1] The girdle or belt of truth.

Notice that we start with truth. We must be truthful and be based solidly upon the truth of God or we cannot stand.

The girdle was a belt that the sword hung from and the shin guards and shoes along with the breastplate of righteousness. It held the whole armour together. Unless you are walking in truth, you will never have the pieces of the whole armour of God working together.

John 14:6 " Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. "

Luke 12:35 " Let your loins be girded about, and [your] lights burning; "

Jesus Christ's very nature is that He is the truth, and when we clothe ourselves with Jesus, we then clothe ourselves in His truth. God will not stand behind a tradition that He has not given. Man's opinions; philosophies; and earthly, religious (not spiritual) traditions will not hold spiritual water.

QUESTION: How do you combat the lies of the wicked one? How do you fight a lie that assails your mind? ANSWER: With the truth of God. The truth of God destroys the lies of the devil!

Matthew 24:35 " Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. "

John 6:63 " It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life. "

The Word of God is a Living Word. The spiritual living word will give you the truth that is alive.

JOHN 1:17 "FOR THE LAW WAS GIVEN BY MOSES, BUT GRACE AND TRUTH CAME BY JESUS CHRIST."

John 1:1 " In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. "

John 1:14 " And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. "

When the lies of the devil can come at you at any time out of anyone's mouth that will allow him to use them, or even if some deceiving spirit is whispering in our own ear, it is very nice to have the truth of the word of God as our girdle... our centerpiece... our foundation that we can use in defense.


[2] Breastplate of Righteousness.

Although the shield and shoes protected only from the front.... so we should never retreat, the breastplate was a little different. It was a two sectioned piece that fit over the front and the back and fastened on the sides and at the belt.

Breastplate = Greek thorax = 2 part breastplate that covers the whole breast or thorax area. It covers and protects the lungs and the HEART...the heart is protected!!!

It was the part that protects your vital organs, especially your heart. And the spiritual breastplate protects your spiritual heart... the desires and intents and emotions are guarded by the breastplate of righteousness. We are kept from sin when we clothe ourselves in Christ's righteousness.

Philippians 3:9 " And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: "

We are not righteous ourselves, but He is our righteousness. And we can protect ourselves from falling into sin by clothing ourselves in Jesus' righteousness.

ISAIAH 64:6 "BUT WE ARE ALL AS AN UNCLEAN THING, AND ALL OUR RIGHTEOUSNESSES ARE AS FILTHY RAGS; AND WE ALL DO FADE AS A LEAF; AND OUR INIQUITIES, LIKE THE WIND, HAVE TAKEN US AWAY."

Our righteousness is not good enough to protect our hearts.

You cannot be righteous of your own power. That is why they needed a better covenant that the Mosaic covenant. Man just cannot keep the entire law. And if you are guilty over one part of the law, then you are guilty of it all. That is why legalism is just as bad as liberalism. Legalism tries to be righteous in your own power following a set of man-made rules to try to be right with God. When we have God's righteousness, Jesus is righteous through us. We must do it in his power before we can be truly righteous.

1 Corinthians 1:30 " But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: "

Jesus is made our wisdom, RIGHTEOUSNESS, sanctification, and redemption. Jesus is our all in all. Remember that Jesus is our living armour. He is our righteousness that protects us from evil.

We aren't saved by our own good works.  But if we are saved, then God brings right works or righteousness through our lives. And it will protect us from living in a sinful state as we did before.

Ephesians 2:8-10 " 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. "

THE BREASTPLATE PROTECTS OUR HEARTS, OUR EMOTIONS, THE HIDDEN SELF, THE REAL US!

SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS
Lesson 2

Ephesians 6:15 " And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; "

Ephesians 6:15 (NAS) " and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;"

Ephesians 6:15 (Amplified) " And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace. "

[3] The shoes of the readiness of the gospel of peace.

Feet are for moving... feet are for your walk. Putting shoes on your feet protects your walk and empowers you walk with God. We are to walk with the Lord.

Galatians 5:16 " [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh."

One way of interpreting this is to walk in a spiritual walk in the word and will of God with the Spirit of God. We are ready or prepared to walk in the will and word of God. You will not be forced back into retreat if you walk in the gospel of peace. Gospel means "good news"... the good news is the news about a King (Jesus Christ ) and how that He wants to make you part of His Kingdom... and the blessings and the joint heirship that you have with Him.

There is also another way of looking at this scripture. Not only walking in the word, but ready to go and spread the word or gospel.  Acts 1:8 " But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. "

It is the gospel or good news of peace. Peace in itself is a mighty weapon that gives stability to our walk. Sometimes the world thinks we must be crazy because when we go through the same grief and problems and pain that they do and we keep a peace about us they can't understand it. [b]But peace is something that is beyond CIRCUMSTANCES.

2 Corinthians 13:11 " Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. "

John 14:27 " Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. "

It isn't that God takes natural "good for us" fear from us, but there is a peace in knowing that He has it in His hands. Don't be afraid at the things that you see, just trust in Jesus and let the peace that He has left for His disciples give you strength. Don't be afraid. Don't be troubled. Have peace.

There is a way that you can avoid worry altogether. Do things worry us? Yes! But when worries arise, this is what we are exhorted by the word of God to do:

Philippians 4:6-7 " 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. "

The New American Standard translation says this, Philippians 4:6 " (NAS) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."

Philippians 4:6-7 (Amplified) " 6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition ([1] definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. 7 And God's peace [shall be yours, that [1] tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [2] garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

Don't be worried or nervous about anything... don't fret... not about any thing that comes up. Why? Because when you take it to God in prayer you give it to Him. Then it is His worry and not yours. You will live longer if you live this way. Stress won't destroy your life if you will practice this scripture.

It does not matter what circumstance arises, take each and every one of them to God by prayer and petition (definite requests). You see, prayer here is a word meaning more of worship and having time with the Lord, and the petition part is when you get to the actual direct request. You don't skip to the petition... but you take time with the Lord first. This is praying effectively.

After you ask... thank Him! Don't wait until you receive it... give it up now unto the Lord. We need to learn that this is how we are told by both Jesus and here by Paul to pray. We start with worship and have time with God, then we ask specifics, and then we end with thanksgiving. This is both prayer and thanksgiving together... makes effectual prayer.

Make your wants... your requests... needs and wants to God. Hey, God cares about you! THIS BRINGS PEACE. THE PEACE OF GOD WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND MINDS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS!

It will guard and garrison your mind and heart... your thoughts and emotions through Jesus Christ! It brings Jesus and His presence by the Spirit of God to guard you against falling to attacks of the mind and heart.

This connects back to walking in the Gospel of Peace... Jesus guards you from destruction... walking in the Gospel... the Word and walking in Him brings this supernatural peace that keeps you from being tormented.

Ephesians 6:16 " Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. "

Ephesians 6:16 (NAS) " in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one."

Ephesians 6:16 (Amplified) " Lift up over all the [covering] shield of [1] saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]."

[4] The Shield of Faith.

Above all! This is most important that you walk in faith more than anything else. I like how the Amplified says it, lift up over all... it covers even all the other armor and all of you! Faith will keep you safe when all else fails you. Don't walk across the street or get out of bed without faith.

Our faith is tied directly into the Lord Jesus Christ. Over and over we have made the point that the whole armor of God goes back to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 12:2 " Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. "

Our faith is born of God. Jesus will finish what He begins in our lives. When we clothe ourselves in Christ and the faith that He gives us we will see the glory of God and the promise of God come to pass in our lives. No matter what comes against us... and I mean no matter, faith is a faithful covering for Jesus Christ is faithful to us!

The shield of faith; shield being a huge square long shield that covered the front of the body. It is big enough to cover everything. It is made up of faith which brings into reality the promised of God. No matter what circumstances come against you, faith will protect you.

We need a faith that will cover all of us.... don't let any part of you be protected by flesh. Sometimes we do things our own way and when we do that we leave faith. And that thing if it be a relationship with our brother, or our finances, or a problem at work... when we do it our way we leave that area unprotected by faith. GOD WILL NOT HONOR FLESH !

Have you ever heard the expression, "well, God helps them that helps themselves?" That expression is not only NOT in the Word of God (though many think it is ), but it is a flagrant disregard to the biblical concept that God honors faith and not flesh. This expression says that God will honor fleshly carnality instead of faith. But your flesh will get burned by the Devil's flaming arrows! Your flesh will get you hurt with no protection. You have to walk in the Word... and walk in faith and put up the shield of faith to deflect and quench those evil fiery darts coming toward us.

NOTE THAT THE SHIELD OF FAITH ONLY PROTECTS FROM THE FRONT..... YOU CANNOT RETREAT FROM THE ENEMY AND HAVE FAITH. YOU WILL GET HURT IF YOU DO: FAITH IS A FRONTAL ARMOR

Hebrews 11:1 " Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. "

Faith is our shield... faith is fundamental to walking through the storm of arrows... faith gives us victory through the attack.

We need faith... how is this biblical faith that brings hopes into reality (substance)? Through the hearing by the Word of God.

Romans 10:17 " So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. "

This is fundamental... if you had not heard the gospel, then you would not have been converted. And we grow in the Lord as we grow in knowledge of the word of God.

We are called to be overcomers in Christ..... and we overcome by our faith.

1 John 5:4 " For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith. "

It will protect you against the fiery darts.   This is not a dart as in a dart game, but a javelin or a spear.... or at the smallest an arrow. They would set them on fire and try to launch them on an enemy to burn down their stronghold or home. The devil is shooting fiery spears at you and your home and yours. But we are promised ALL of them will fail before the shield of faith.

Once again this is the same for wicked as in the evil of Matthew 6. It denotes in this case a title. The wicked one. There is a real and hateful devil trying to destroy all that God has given unto you.  There is no attack... no matter what comes against you that can overcome you when you walk in faith and clothe yourself in the shield of faith.... Jesus Christ. No power of the enemy can overcome your life. Jesus promised power over all of the powers of the devil.

Luke 10:19 " Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. "

Faith protects against all attacks. No thing shall by any means hurt you. I like that promise. When the enemy comes against your finances... put your shield over them and believe God to take care of you. Believe that His word is true. Now, you really must seek God's Kingdom and righteousness first... that's part of putting on the shield over that area. You see, faith is built upon the word of God. We have to walk in it, but if we do we can pray and take faith and have it protect us.

When the enemy is acting like some kind of Goliath taunting us, we need to call on the promises of God and know that God is still God, and like David come to him in the name of the Lord. Don't be defeated, pull out the armour of faith and then you can march forward again.

They will be quenched... put out. Faith kills the power of Satan's attacks. When the devil's minions come to attack, your faith in God.... of course our relationship must be right first.... will destroy their power over you and you shall overcome them.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS
Lesson 3

Ephesians 6:17 " And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: "

[5] The helmet of salvation.

A helmet protects your head, your vision, your brain, your neck... it is a vital part of any soldier's armor.

Literally, the helmet of salvation gives protection of my mind and my thoughts by the salvation of the Lord.

Hebrews 5:9 " And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; "

Jesus Christ is your salvation, He is your deliverer. When we obey Him, he is our salvation. When the enemy tries to destroy you and your mind and comes against your thoughts, then Jesus brings to you your salvation and gives you eternal, abundant life.

John 10:10 " The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly. "

And although the enemy tries to steal our peace, our righteousness and attack the very thoughts of our minds, Jesus is a helmet of salvation for my life.

Philippians 4:7 " And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. "

Quoting this scripture again, here you see that through Jesus Christ, the peace of God is a guard that will guard your very thoughts. The Greek word for keep means literally to guard. Jesus will guard your thoughts or minds and your feelings, or your hearts. Clothe your mind with Jesus.

Strongholds that Satan builds in our lives are literally strongholds of our minds. They are built from thoughts that we have. We will see this in more detail when we study strongholds, but until then look at this:

2 Corinthians 10:5 " Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; "

Jesus will protect your thought life if you will submit it unto Him. This does not mean that you will never have a temptation or a disturbing thought..... but you can submit your mind to Christ and He will take into captivity those thoughts that build strongholds against Him.

And one last verse. And although one translation of a sound mind means self-control, what it really says is a sound mind that gives us self-control.

2 Timothy 1:7 " For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. "

You can put on the helmet of salvation, and the enemy cannot overcome your mind.

[6] The Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

1. The Sword of the Spirit..... here you see not a defensive weapon, but instead an offensive weapon. This is one of the weapons that God gives us that tears down strongholds. The word of God cannot be overstated in giving it's importance in our victories.

2. It is a sword of the spirit..... the Holy Spirit is involved in this weapon... it is of the Holy Spirit for it is the sword of the Spirit. You see, you cannot fight a spiritual fight with fleshly or carnal weapons. And the Holy Spirit gives us weapons more powerful than any demon's weapons. This sword is the one thing that the powers of Satan are afraid you might learn to use.

3. This sword is further qualified by the explanation, which is the Word of God. The word of God. There are two New Testament Greek words for ‘word'. One is Logos.... the perfect entire written word of God which is used in John 1:1... Jesus Christ was the Logos of God. This is not the word used here.

4. The word for ‘word' here is Rhema {ray-ma}, which means the SPOKEN WORD OF GOD. It's the proclaimed or spoken word, not the written word. There is a difference. It wields power against the Devil when you speak the word in faith.

5. Throwing a bible at a demon won't scare him, but if you speak the word to him, it will cut him. The word will overcome the enemy... not yelling real loud, or even praying long... if we pray amiss. It is when we pray the word and speak the word that it will tear down strongholds.

6. When Jesus was tried in the wilderness, look at how He dealt with it:

Matthew 4:1-11 " 1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. {tempt: or, try, or, put to trial, or, proof} 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. "

7. Now, I doubt that any of us has ever had the Devil himself, that old dragon come and tempt us... by the way from Genesis to Revelation he is a dragon and guess what? He is really a dragon. He was a cherubim in Ezekiel 28, and cherubim do not look like men. Read Revelation 4 and Ezekiel 1. He is a very powerful cherub... a dragon, but Jesus defeated him simply by knowing and using the Word of God.

8. The Devil will quote scripture, too. But watch out, he will either misquote it or use it out of context. Jesus used the word against even this wile of the Devil. The authority of the word will destroy the power of the devil.

9. The word of God is alive and powerful and when the Holy Spirit touches it, it becomes very powerful indeed. Jesus said this....

John 6:63 " It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life. "

10. The words of Jesus are alive and powerful and made alive by the Holy Spirit. You must have Spirit and Truth together to have real power or according to John 4, true worship. But when the Spirit makes the Word of God come alive, it becomes a powerful weapon.

Hebrews 4:12 " For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. "

11. It will cut out the carnality and bring a balm to the spirit. It will make the Spirit healthy and destroy the power of the devil through our flesh. The enemy uses our flesh, and word of God destroys that power that he has. When we speak the word it is sharp enough to not only to remove our carnality, but to back the devil off of our lives.

12. We see this same symbolism in the book of Revelation coming from the mouth of Jesus:

Revelation 1:16 " And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength. "

Revelation 19:15-16 " 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. "

13. When we speak the word of God, and we use the authority of the word and the Holy Spirit gives power to that word, we are using the sword of the Spirit. Now, how do you get the Spirit of God involved.... by praying and seeking God's face and submitting yourselves to God first.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS
Lesson 4

Ephesians 6:18 " Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; "

[7] Praying with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit... the forgotten piece of armor.

Prayer is the force that binds the armor together and makes it work. Prayer is the taking of the armor in the first place. It is impossible to take the whole armor of God without prayer. You will find that most of spiritual warfare is actually prayer. Prayer brings God into our lives with power.

That is why just getting on top of a mountain and building and claiming a city for Jesus is not sufficient by itself to bring any kind of change. But most spiritual warfare is done in real effective prayer time together with others of the same accord. And it is won soul by soul as you win your community to Christ.

You will never have the spiritual authority without time with God in prayer. And you will never win the local drug dealers, and the local drunks, and the local occultists, or anyone else for that matter until you spend time with God in prayer. It just won't come to you. It actually takes some work... that's why very little evangelism takes place anymore. It requires some work.

You cannot resist evil and the devil without submitting or subjecting yourself to God through prayer first. It just will not happen. We must pray to take the armor. And we must pray to effectively use it.

It isn't just enough to just pray. We must learn what the Bible teaches on praying effectively. It isn't enough to just say "I'm going to resist the devil", we must understand the ways he moves against us behind the scenes and understand his tactics.... and get in line with the commands of the Holy Spirit and walk in what the word says we are supposed to do. It's time to grow some. It's time for revival !

WHAT PRAYER WILL DO:

Acts 12:5 " Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. "  {prayer...: or, instant and earnest prayer was made}

Prayer brought an angel who loosed Peter from his prison. Prayer will change things.

1 Timothy 2:1 " I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; "

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 " 16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. "

So we are to always pray, but the exhortation of Ephesians 6 with the whole armour of God said praying in the Spirit. Our prayers are more effective when we pray in the Spirit:

Romans 8:15 " For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. "

Romans 8:26-27 " 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God. "

Jude 1:20 " But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, "

Praying in the Holy Ghost will build us up in our most holy faith. We need the Spirit of God to get involved in our prayer and in our day to day fight with evil [that's what it is] if we want to be more than just getting by. God wants us to take land for Jesus and we can only do that through the Spirit.

THERE IS ANOTHER PASSAGE THAT PAUL GIVES US ON THE ARMOUR OF LIGHT THAT MAKES THESE THINGS EVEN MORE CLEAR. EVERY PART OF THE ARMOUR OF GOD IS ACTUALLY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST THAT WE ARE CLOTHED IN THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Romans 13:12-14 " 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof]. "

Romans 13:12-14 (Amplified) " 12 The night is far gone and the day is almost here. Let us then drop (fling away) the works and deeds of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light. 13 Let us live and conduct ourselves honorably and becomingly as in the [open light of] day, not in reveling (carousing) and drunkenness, not in immorality and debauchery (sensuality and licentiousness), not in quarreling and jealousy. 14But clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and make no provision for [indulging] the flesh [put a stop to thinking about the evil cravings of your physical nature] to [gratify its] desires (lusts)."

This exhortation tells us that first, you cannot walk in the works of darkness and put on the armor of light at the same time. They are not compatible. We must cast off the works of darkness. All of the works of the flesh and take up Jesus... our armor.

There is an exhortation to walk honestly as in the day, not in the lifestyle of the world. Why are our churches powerless today on the most part? Because most churches don't preach against sin. If you don't ever quit walking and talking like the world, you cannot walk in the Spirit.

TRUTH: THE ARMOR OF LIGHT WE ARE TO PUT ON IS ACTUALLY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. AND IF WE HAVE OUR ARMOUR, HE DOES NOT ALLOW ANY PROVISION FOR THE FLESH TO FULFILL THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH.

The devil cannot get in to do us any damage if Jesus is covering all of us. And the painful truth is that when we get really wounded where we cannot go on, there was some area Jesus did not cover.

And why wasn't He covering it... the armor is the whole armor or the complete armor... if we will submit to God and really take it, it will cover all of us. If we weren't covered, then we didn't submit to God in that area.

1 Thessalonians 5:7-8 " 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. "

A last days exhortation, don't be caught up in the darkness of this life, but put on the breastplate of faith and love here.  The point is that faith and love are also weapons that protect us along with righteousness.

Faith has been covered by the shield of faith, but love should be shown as to have a power as a weapon as much as anything else. That should not be surprising considering that love is the very nature of who God is.

Love is a very powerful weapon. When the devil raises up people against you and your flesh wants to give into the same trap that they are in, the love of God is a breastplate protecting your heart from falling into sin.

Love is a power that when men do evil to you, keeps you from falling into that same evil and possibly through that love, win them to Jesus.

Love is a power that defeats fear. Fearfulness is unbelief personified. And that kind of fear causes anxiety and worry and cowardice about standing up in faith. Love destroys fear's power:

1 John 4:18 " There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. "

Fear is a weapon used against the children of God. But when our love is perfected, we have a perfect shield around our hearts protecting us from that torment of fear. I'm not speaking of reasonable fears, such as don't play in traffic.  But the fears or worry that comes from not trusting God is destroyed by the love of God.  We know that He loves us!

SECTION TWO
Binding and Loosing: from the Authority to the Power to do it.


THE MAIN TEXT THAT WE SHALL USE, I SHALL POST NOW. WE SHALL COME BACK TO IT A BIT LATER, BUT I THINK I NEED TO DEAL WITH SOME THINGS FIRST.

Matthew 16:15-19 "15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. "

The Roman Catholic Church has taken this to mean a lot of different things other than what the context says. First of all, Peter is not the Rock the church is built on. Jesus is the petra that it is built on which is shown by all the other scriptures about the stone that the builders rejected and the chief cornerstone the living stones of the church are built from. It is the Lord Jesus Christ... not Peter. Simon here was called petros, a little stone. The word Rock is Petra, a massive boulder. So, we need to understand that.

Also, the connotation of spiritual binding and loosing connects in context to the verse before... the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it... binding and loosing is a spiritual authority given by the keys (which represents authority) given to the church (not just Peter or the pope as the RC teaches).

St. Peter is not standing at the gates in heaven no matter how many cartoons or jokes we get saturated in that shows him thus. These keys are spiritual authority given to the church so that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. In fact, the church is given great authority by Jesus here.

INTRODUCTION: A few words and a certain amount of the author's opinion about this section of our study on binding and loosing so that we can set a tone for this part of our teaching.

In understanding Binding and Loosing, there are some distinctions that must be made between authority and power. And we need to understand what we have scriptural authority to do and what we don't have scriptural authority to do.

Let's understand some things, that God will back up His Word.... the Word of God is true, and demons are not afraid of our traditions and teachings if they aren't backed up by the Word of God rightly divided ( I say that because you can take a single scripture out of context and try to prove almost anything wrong ). Let's stay scriptural about our approach, and then we know that we have a position of strength since God will back us.

I. First things first:

Scripturally, there are some ELEMENTS or basic things that you must have and be operating in before you can really bind demonic attacks and make an effectual stand of God.

It is not the intention of this study to over-complicate your understanding. But there are some things that must be understood in being effective in binding and loosing spirits, and spiritual warfare in general. The first thing is you have to be born again, and the blood of Jesus Christ must be a part of your life to break the authority of sin and the devil.

[ELEMENT #1] FIRST ELEMENT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS TO BREAK SATAN'S AUTHORITY.

Genesis 1:26 " And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. "

Jesus said this about Satan in Luke 10:18-19, " 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. "

And Satan or the Serpent was in the garden already when the man and woman were put into the garden. And he was already definitely a fallen being... in fact, he was actually a prisoner there, but he was very subtle and seduced the woman into falling. And the woman seduced the man into falling. And through that sin that was handed down through Adam, Satan gained much authority over mankind.

So Adam was given dominion over Satan, and by following Satan in his sin he turned around and gave much of that authority back to Satan. And the sin of Adam has been passed down by our blood.

Romans 5:12-14 " 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. "

Romans 3:23-25 " 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; "

According to Leviticus 17:11, " For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul. ", and our blood was tainted with sin. God required our lives because of the sin in our blood.

The blood of Adam has the life force or the life or the soul in it. The Hebrew word for life and soul are the same word nephesh. When Adam sinned, God required the Nephesh or life/soul of man for sin. God told man in the Hebrew, if you eat from the tree dying you shall die. And the devil gained power over man through the sin in his life through the ultimate power of death.

Hebrews 2:14 " Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; "

Jesus Christ was not called Jesus before He was born of the Virgin Mary. He was the Word or LOGOS of God according to John 1:1.  John 1:1-2 " 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. " ~ He became flesh and was a totally human being except he had no sin. His blood was not tainted by the sin that we are born into; for sin is passed through the father, and Jesus' father was GOD.

Jesus shed His blood for us. And the life force that flowed from His blood paid the price of death in ours. The blood of Jesus Christ literally destroyed the power of death that Satan had over mankind. Sin gives demons power over us. But the blood of Jesus broke their authority.

So, the devil had through sin much authority over man through man's sin. When you sin, you give demons authority or the right to hurt you.

If the blood is not present in your life, then demons and the Devil himself does not have to do anything you say or want... in other words you have no power over them because of the sin in your blood. IT IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS THAT BREAKS HIS AUTHORITY.

Our victory over sin and the devil is through the cross; through the cross of Jesus Christ, Colossians 2:15 " [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."

Acts 10:38 " How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. "

Point : Authority is different from power. Authority is the right to take action or give commands, power is what enforces that right or authority. The word power in Hebrews 2:14 means more than just power or force, it means authority or dominion. The blood of Jesus breaks Satan's dominion over us!

Once You Have That Relationship With Christ, And The Blood of Jesus Is Applied.  That Breaks The Devil's Actual Rights to Your Soul; But That Doesn't Stop The Thief From Trying to Steal You. Some people think because they have the blood applied that that's all there is to resisting the devil. Sorry, it's not like that. Let's look at it. But you must have the blood of Jesus first.

Hebrews 2:14 " Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; "

Colossians 2:14-15 " 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. "

Romans 14:9 " For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. "

1 John 3:8 " He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. "

Galatians 5:1 " Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. "

[ELEMENT #2] SUBMITTING TO GOD SO JESUS WILL RISE UP IN US. DON'T FIGHT ALONE.

James 4:7 " Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. "

Greek Interlinear of James 4:7 "Submit yourselves <hupotasso> therefore <oun> to God <theos>. Resist <anthistemi> the devil <diabolos>, and <kai> he will flee <pheugo> from <apo> you <humon>."

Power Point: This is a key to winning.  If you do not understand this, then you will never be victorious in your battle against evil. We are in a war, and the enemy has declared war on us and desires to drag all of mankind to Hell. Daily, there are forces trying to sap the very victory out of our lives. This key shows our relationship to both God and the Devil. We have to be in the right "attitude" toward both. We submit to God and resist the Devil.

Quick Lexicon entries:

• SUBMIT = Greek hupotasso = a military term meaning to be subject to someone's will and to be obedient to that authority.
• YOURSELVES = Greek hupotasso meaning 'be ye subject'.
• TO GOD = Greek Theos = GOD, the Creator.
• RESIST = Greek anthistemi = to stand against or oppose. To set against or resist. To make a stand against or come against. Note that to resist is the opposite of 'subject'.
• DEVIL = Greek diabolos meaning devil or false accuser (slanderer). Also known as Satan, Evil One.
• FLEE = Greek pheugo (fyoo-go) which means to flee away and seek safety, or to run in terror.
• YOU = Greek humon which means YOU.


You decide if you will follow the will of the flesh, the world, the devil, or as we should, unto God. But it is our decision. We must choose to first place ourselves under God's subjection. We must submit to God first. Don't ever even begin to think about standing against the devil if you haven't submitted to God first.

This is where the victory is! When we won't submit ourselves unto God and His Word, and His order that He has placed, then we end up fighting alone. You can pray until you are blue in the face, but until you get rid of your will and become subject unto God you will be fighting alone.

You cannot go off on your own against the devil. Jesus is the leader of His church! You cannot take the weapons or get the plan if you haven't submitted to your commanding officer.

Point to Ponder: The Devil and his fallen angels and demons are not impressed by you. You are a human being. He is not scared of you no matter how loud or powerful you seem to be. But they are terrified of Jesus Christ. Jesus put them all to an open shame and defeated them at the Cross (Colossians 2:15). And when you surrender to God... you are submitting to Jesus and the Holy Spirit reveals Jesus in us... that's what terrifies the powers of the enemy into fleeing.

Submission and resistance are diametrically opposite to one another. We resist evil and submit to good. God is the author of all good. Satan is the originator of the corruption and disobedience against God which is evil. In one way of looking at evil, evil is the resistance against God and His will and presence. So, that anything that opposes God and his will is by nature evil.

If we are eaten up by the works of the flesh such as... fornication (sexual immorality), idolatry, discord, wrath, witchcraft, fits of rage, ambition, drunkenness, hatred, etc... then we are not able to stand against evil. Evil has a hold over us through the weaknesses of our flesh. We must submit to God to destroy the hold of evil over us first before we can ever resist the evil one.

NAS of James 4:1-7 " 1What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? 2You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: " He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"? 6But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 7Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. "

You are fighting among yourselves instead of true evil. You commit murder by speaking evil of others and killing their influence. You are envious and don't seek God's face. When you do pray, you ask for carnal things with the wrong motives. You are spiritual adulteresses and adulterers because you are friends with the world. You cannot fight the evil one who gives the spirit of this world that leads people into sin while you are friends with that world which he controls.

Those who are proud, God will Himself resist. We will be resisted by God (who is literally irresistible) if we remain proud.

DECIDE FIRST TO PRAY AND SUBMIT OURSELVES UNTO GOD... TO SEEK THE FACE OF GOD... THEN RESIST THE DEVIL!

Resist the Devil... we are called to resist. That doesn't mean that we learn exorcism rites or use guns or explosives to fight the devil. It is a spiritual fight waged with spiritual weapons. But the point is that God has given us the "whole armor of God" and the weapons that we need to be overcomers.

1 John 4:4 " Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. "

We are called to make a stand... to RESIST.

Luke 10:19 " Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. "

This is a steadfast resistance that we are to have. If we love God, then we will hate the Devil.

The devil... our enemy, our adversary... the fallen cherub (Ezekiel 28) that wanted to exalt his throne at one time next to the Almighty's and fell.

Isaiah 14:12-15 " 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. "

Luke 10:18 " And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. "

He is the main king of the fallen angels, and his minions. Here is an interesting note. Very few times do people actually have a run-in with the actual devil. There is only one Devil, and many fallen angels and even more demons. Jesus had an altercation in the wilderness with the actual devil. But when we speak of resisting the evil one or the Devil, then we are speaking not just of him, but of the demonic hordes that follow this unholy king (principality).

He (they) will FLEE = Greek pheugo = to run away in fear and escape. Demons are afraid of the manifestation of Jesus Christ through our lives.

II. The Command given by Peter:

And we have this major reference given by the Apostle Peter in his first letter that reiterates this call in scripture to resist the Devil :

1 PETER 5:6-9 " 6 HUMBLE YOURSELVES THEREFORE UNDER THE MIGHTY HAND OF GOD, THAT HE MAY EXALT YOU IN DUE TIME: 7 CASTING ALL YOUR CARE UPON HIM; FOR HE CARETH FOR YOU. 8 BE SOBER, BE VIGILANT; BECAUSE YOUR ADVERSARY THE DEVIL, AS A ROARING LION, WALKETH ABOUT, SEEKING WHOM HE MAY DEVOUR: 9 WHOM RESIST STEDFAST IN THE FAITH, KNOWING THAT THE SAME AFFLICTIONS ARE ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR BRETHREN THAT ARE IN THE WORLD. "

The call to humility is repeated once again. The humbling process and making yourself subject to God is necessary before that you can resist the enemy. There is a war raging, and the need for us to be in God's will is paramount if we want to win. There are also many cares of life and hurts that we have inflicted upon us, and we can cast our cares upon the Lord because He cares for us. The fact that God loves us gives us victory.

There is also a promise that if you humble yourselves, that He will exalt you in due time. You don't have to lift yourself up... lift up the Lord and humble yourself and God Himself will lift us up. One of the tactics of the Devil is to get us anxious. There are many in the army of the Lord that have not submitted to God, and have not cast their care upon the Lord... and because that they cannot bear the load themselves, lose their victory and are defeated personally in their lives. That person is hindered from working for the Lord.

Here's another call... be sober and be vigilant. Do not take this for granted... do not underestimate your enemy (don't overestimate him either). You cannot ignore the enemy or you will give him an advantage.

Sober = Greek nepho which is to be clear headed and collected in spirit... not intoxicated with the things of the world... not allowing your perceptions to become clouded.

Vigilant = Greek gregoreuo which is to watch and give strict attention to... to be both cautious and active.

This is a warfare situation. Satan is trying to destroy you. Satan is trying devour you. You must not let your guard down. Ephesians 4:27 " Neither give place to the devil. "

NOTICE PLEASE: the writer says, your adversary the devil. Both devil (false accuser) and adversary (enemy in court) is used in the same description of this fallen angel. He is your adversary... your enemy and he is the false accuser or the father of liars.

As a roaring lion... it doesn't say that he is a roaring lion. Jesus is called the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Satan is a "wannabe". He is as a roaring lion. He isn't a lion, but he goes about as one.

Secondly, despite what you might have heard, he isn't toothless for he is seeking whom he may devour. What's he going to do? Gum you to death? We are told to be sober and vigilant because there is some danger. He is trying to devour us.

The older lions do roar to scare their pray into freezing because the older lion no longer has the ability and strength and endurance to catch prey through sheer power any more. The older lion has lost his power to do that, so he uses fear to freeze his prey. In the same way, the adversary uses the same method.

You see, God is greater and when we walk with Jesus Christ and Christ and Heavenly Father has made their abode in us... then we walk submitted to God and we have cast our cares upon Him... then God moves through us and the Lion of the Tribe of Judah will overcome the imitator (the devil).

1 John 4:4 " Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. "

He and his forces are very active. They are walking about.... seeking. As someone said, he is on his job... are we? He is looking for someone to devour. He wants to devour you... he wants to destroy you. He wants to rob you of every good thing that God would bring into your life.

The call to resist! The same as the James 4:7, resisting the Devil. You can resist the evil one. God gives us the power and authority to resist the Devil and his forces when we submit to God first. We are called to resist. We must not allow evil to go unchecked!!!!!

If you are on the Lord's side, then you are the Devil's enemy. We are called to resist. We must resist this spiritual adversary with all the spiritual weapons and armor that God has given to us. How do we resist? In the Faith! It is a fight of faith. It is not only a walk of faith, but a fight of faith as well. We resist Him in the faith.

1 Timothy 6:12 " Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. "

Through the weapons of faith, the enemy is put to flight! Strongholds are broken and the devil will run... and it is done through faith in Jesus Christ's name.

One last point to this scripture. The same afflictions or problems and attacks that you are suffering are not unique. There are others among your brethren in the world that have and are going through the same things. We are all in the same warfare against the same enemy and are following the same God.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that your problem is unique and that there is no hope. God gives us power to overcome the evil one in Jesus' name.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS
Lesson 7



[ELEMENT #3] SUBJECTING YOURSELF UNDER JESUS' LORDSHIP LEADS TO THE NEXT ELEMENT: TAKING THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD OR SPIRITUALLY CLOTHING YOURSELF IN JESUS CHRIST. USE THE ARMOUR THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US.

You can't hold hands with the devil and fight him, too. You have to clothe yourself with Jesus. We have already covered taking the Whole Armor of God in the beginning of this study, and all that I will say to you here is... you must take this holy armor if you want to succeed, for it is an element of binding and loosing as well.

Ephesians 6:13 " Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. "

[1] Belt of truth.... walk in the truth of Jesus and His word and His integrity.... protection against lies.
[2] Breastplate of righteousness..... protects your heart from sin. Jesus is our righteousness.
[3] Walking in the preparation or readiness of the gospel of peace.... walk in the word... & spread it!
[4] Shield of faith..... Hebrews 12:2 - Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Faith protects from
all of the attacks of the wicked one.
[5] Helmet of Salvation..... Jesus is the author of eternal salvation.... his peace will keep or guard our
minds and hearts through Christ Jesus our Lord.
[6] Take the sword of the Spirit.... the [rhema] spoken word of God... demons fear this one!
[7] Praying with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.... this is fundamental to taking the Lord
Jesus Christ as your armour.

After you have broken Satan's authority by the blood of Jesus.... there is power in the blood to break the devil's authority, and you have submitted yourself to God so Jesus will rise up in you, and you have armed yourself with the armour of God [the Lord Jesus Christ], then you are ready to...

TAKE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY OVER THE DEVIL THROUGH GOD and HIS WORD !


[ELEMENT #4] USE THE AUTHORITY JESUS GAVE HIS CHURCH TO BIND AND LOOSE IN THE SPIRITUAL REALM. USE THE AUTHORITY TO BIND THE STRONGMAN.

Matthew 16:18 " And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. "

Here is a promise that should give us some thought when we feel that we're going under and defeated. If we are part of that glorious church, then we have the promise that the gates of Hell will not prevail against us.

God's church isn't a defeated church! It is an overcoming church. God has called us to take back what the enemy has stolen and take back the land. It's war!

JESUS SAID, 'I ALSO SAY UNTO THEE..."

• Thou art Peter = Greek petros = a stone or a little stone

• Upon this rock = Greek petra = a large rock like a cliff

• Not time here to argue with Catholic theologians, but the rock that the church is built on is the stone which the builders rejected: the Lord Jesus Christ. The head of the church, not Peter.

Ephesians 2:19 " Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone]; "

• I will build my church: build = Greek oikodemeo = to build and establish. Note that the church does not belong to any man. It belongs to Jesus.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 " 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. "

We belong to Jesus! Praise God that the devil can't claim me anymore.

Church: Greek ekklesia = the assembly; the assembly of the 'called out' ones; the assembly of the faithful christians. No denominations here, just the ones who belong to Jesus.

The gates of hell: the gates of the stronghold or fortification of the forces of hell. Like the walls of Jericho, gates that are meant to keep us from claiming what God has promised.

Many times people use this in the context of when the devil attacks us, we will be safe from the gates of hell: THIS IS BACKWARDS! WE ARE NOT FIGHTING A DEFENSIVE WAR. WE ARE FIGHTING AN OFFENSIVE WAR.

GATES ARE STATIONARY: IT ISN'T THE GATES COMING AGAINST US, IT IS US COMING AGAINST THE GATES.

We, through this authority that Jesus has given us, and his word are stronger than the gates of hell. Like Jericho, they must fall flat.

Whatsoever: Greek ean = whosoever or whatsoever, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.

Bind: Greek deo = to forbid, stop, prohibit = to tie it up.


We are given the authority or the right to bind on earth, and God backs it up in Heaven for His church. The gates of Hell cannot withstand our attack, and we will bind demonic spirits and their powers in the name of Jesus Christ and the authority He gave us here.

We are given a right to use the name of Jesus to bind demons and loose people from the powers of Hell by the authority that Jesus gave us, His church here in Matthew. This is taking the kingdom.

Matthew 11:12 " And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. "

Keys are authority. The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the church.... Jesus has given us the keys of authority that allows us to bind and loose. The church of the Lord Jesus Christ has been given the authority to literally bind and loose spiritual forces.

The church is called to stand in this authority, and that is why that the church will not be overtaken for we stand in the authority of Jesus Christ.... we are the body of Christ.

There are some that would argue... there is always someone who will about almost everything.... that this binding had to do with excommunication. This is not the context of the scripture. The Greek word for bind means to tie up. It is the same word by the way used for the woman who was bound with an infirmity that Jesus loosed.


Luke 13:11-13 " 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up [herself]. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called [her to him], and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid [his] hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. "

When the spiritual strongmen are encountered, Jesus has given us the authority to bind them. This discourse followed an example of Jesus casting out a demon out of a blind and dumb man:

Matthew 12:22-27 " 22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24 But when the Pharisees heard [it], they said, This [fellow] doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. {Beelzebub: Gr. Beelzebul} 25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast [them] out? therefore they shall be your judges. "

Matthew 12:28-29 " 28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. "

The Holy Spirit is the activator of the authority of Christ. In other words, He is the stronger man that brings the power of God to bear on the situation and overcomes the wicked strongmen.

Remember that there is a difference in authority and power or force. Satan's authority over us through death was broken by the blood of Jesus Christ. But here, the church is given authority literally over the devil and his forces.

Luke 10:19 " Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. "

Jesus has literally given us the authority by the Word of God to use His name to apply the power of God. We have the authority to do it as Christians (washed in the blood of Jesus Christ spiritually) part of Jesus' church to invoke the "power of God" to bind strongmen. And when we do, the Holy Spirit Himself will activate that power and literally becomes "the stronger man"!

We have been given a spiritual power over all of the power of the enemy. Once again, this follows that we have the other elements of binding the demonic powers... such as the blood of Jesus and us submitting ourselves unto God, etc.

Mark 16:17 " And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; "

Not just the preachers, but the believers.... the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. We have the authority in the name of Jesus over the powers of the enemy!

In Matthew 12:29, no other way to enter into a strong man's house and seize his goods or precious vessels but to bind him first.

**NOTE**THAT THE GREEK WORD FOR BIND HERE IS THE EXACT SAME WORD USED IN MATTHEW 16. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BINDING AND LOOSING IN MATTHEW 16.

STRONG MAN: Greek ischuros = a mighty man of war; a demonic warrior.

House = his fortress, his stronghold. The stronghold that the demonic strong man has built and guards. This might be a strong hold of a person (that person's mind and heart), or a household, or over a city. Like Jericho, when the devil steals something, he will build walls and protect it (he squats on the land) like he has some kind of right to do so.

Take a spoil, in war there are spoils to take. When we come against the gates of hell and tear down strongholds in people's lives, we take the spoil of that person for Jesus Christ. The land we are fighting for is the land of the human soul.

WE FIRST BIND THE STRONG MAN AND THEN WE CAN SPOIL THE STRONGHOLD OR HOUSE TO TAKE A SPOIL:

What arenas of war can be the stronghold that the strongman is guarding?

a. individual: heart and mind and sometimes the body
b. household
c. church
d. land: our communities and cities and nation

And finally, this also covers the FINAL ELEMENT that will bring deliverance from a demonic attack.

The authority of binding and loosing is backed up by God by the power of the Holy Spirit.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE BASICS
Lesson 8


[ELEMENT #5] THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE ACTUAL FORCE THAT BINDS THE STRONGMEN AND CAUSES THEM TO BECOME POWERLESS.

When we have the first four elements... the blood of Jesus; submission to God in prayer and will; having taken the whole armor of God and clothed in Jesus; and using the authority of Jesus He gave unto us.... then the fifth element will come, the Holy Spirit backing up that authority.

Jesus made it clear that he cast out demons through the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the agent that literally binds demons and looses people. Here's how it happens:

A strongman = Greek ischuros, a well armed warrior or soldier.... a strong man of war.

How do you enter into that area that the demonic warrior has made a stronghold and spoil his goods.... take back what he's stolen? You have to bind the strongman ! How did Jesus say He bound the strongman?

Through the Spirit of God! You have to take authority over that strongman and the Holy Spirit will through His POWER bind that demonic strongman.

THE POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST WILL BACK UP THE AUTHORITY JESUS GAVE HIS CHURCH!

Luke's account said this,

Luke 11:21-22 " 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. "

GREEK TRANSLATION OF LUKE 11:21 "WHEN THE STRONG MAN HAVING BEEN WELL ARMED{,} GUARDS THE OF HIMSELF PALACE, IN PEACE IS [ARE] THE GOODS OF HIM.

The enemy will place his forces in a place or person because basically, he is a thief (John 10:10). He will like a squatter sit on land that really isn't his and put his guards in place to keep it. There are so many lives that are bound up because there is a demonic strongman in charge of them.

The strong man, or demonic man of war guards his house. His house might be somebody's body.

People do still get demon possessed today.  Or it might be control over a household. But whichever, that demon will fight to keep it's home. So that it can keep it's stolen goods captive or in peace. The devil doesn't just roll over when you realize he is there, you must take the authority that Christ has given you over him.

GREEK LITERAL TRANSLATION OF LUKE 11:22 "BUT WHEN A STRONGER [THAN] HIM COMING UPON OVERCOMES HIM, THE ARMOUR OF HIM HE TAKES, ON WHICH HE HAD RELIED, AND THE ARMS OF HIM DISTRIBUTES."

The stronger than he in Greek is ischuteros, or the stronger man of war. The Holy Ghost is the ultimate strong man of war.... He is the stronger one, stronger than any demonic strongmen. His power is truly absolute and when He enters the arena, His enemies will fall and be bound.

He said that He takes from him all of the armor that he trusted in.... and then takes the spoils. That's the power of the Church against the gates of Hell. We underestimate God and the power that He has given unto us.

Matthew 16:18 " And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Many in the church has misunderstood and tried to make it political power or something along those lines, but the weapons of our warfare are not carnal or fleshly. They're mighty through God !

Is the enemy coming against you, your loved ones, your finances, your walk with God, your marriage, your children, your town, your schools???? It's time to take a spoil.... take back what he's stolen.

Sometimes, we have areas where the enemy really torments and tears us down. He steals our zeal toward God and the church; he robs us of our joy. It's time to say, ENOUGH! If you will place those elements in place, you can bind the strong men trying to rob you.

More now on spiritual Loosing. This is ignored too many times.

Luke 13:11-13 " 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up [herself]. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called [her to him], and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid [his] hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. "

Here, demons bound her and Jesus loosed her. We have the spiritual, scriptural authority to loose people from bondages in prayer. Now having said this... many diseases are natural and without any spiritual power behind it. But in this case, she had a "spirit of infirmity".

Loose = Greek luo = to set free, let go, to take away authority or a yoke.

In these scriptures, the spirit of infirmity had bound this woman. Not all sickness is caused of demons. But there are times when demons are responsible for sickness. If this is not true then Jesus did not know what he was talking about and doing.

This child of Abraham had been tormented by a "spirit of infirmity" for 18 years. This is more than "just" a curvature of the spine. She was literally held over and Jesus didn't just heal her, "He loosed her"!

We need to be careful that in this age of disbelief and ungodliness that the carnality of this world makes us doubt the validity of God's word. The new and old testament teach that some sickness need God's healing, while others are spiritual in nature and that person needs deliverance.

Jesus would heal some, and others as this woman he would loose them from the demonic oppression that destroyed their lives.

Jesus loosed the authority of this demon, and more broadly the devil in this woman's life. Jesus' authority is the final authority.


So here is the review, in a reverse order.

You are given the authority by Jesus in the Word of God to bind the forces of Hell, and the power of the Holy Spirit backs up that authority.

It is the person and power of the Holy Spirit that does the actual binding. But it is the authority of the Word of God we use when we bind that the Holy Spirit is honoring.

We must bind; we are told that we have the authority to bind.

Don't pray, God stop this demon from tormenting my mind. Instead use that authority.... STOP, I bind you in the name of Jesus Christ and command you to go from here. You have the authority to do this and the power of the Holy Spirit does the actual work in binding the strongman.

But before that will work we must have put on our armor and be armed with the weapons that Jesus has given us. We cannot fight the enemy without weapons... think about it; we must use the weapons that He has given unto us.

How can you use the authority of the Word of God if you don't take the sword of the Spirit which is the spoken word of God and use it with faith, your shield?

Plus you must have submitted yourself unto God in your prayer life or none of this will work. Submit ourselves to God, seek His face so Jesus will rise in us in our fight of faith. And it is a fight of faith.

1 Timothy 6:12 " Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. "

And we have to be born again with the authority of Satan broken over us through the blood of Jesus Christ.... or none of this will work. So, it's really not complicated if you look at it as living a Christian lifestyle that you are supposed to live to have the power to actually wage war.
